“Llata” Project in Mallorca

The Moeurs Foundation’s latest project is aimed at promoting the understanding and support of dying traditions of artisanal craftmanship in Mallorca, such as palm weaving, traditional printmaking and embroidery.

The Moeurs Foundation is working alongside artisans on the island to create traditional products with a modern twist, incorporating ancestral craft into innovative pieces.

We begin with the Mallorcan traditional craftsmanship of “llata”, which sees bleached and dried palm fronds woven into a variety of objects, most popularly woven bags known locally as “senallas”.

Palm weaving is time-consuming and intricate work, practiced by fewer and fewer people on the island. As such, much of the production these bags has moved to Morocco where labour and production costs are cheaper. However, it means that the tradition in Mallorca could easily die out within the next generation.

We are working with other local artisans to transform these bags into modern objets, incorporating hand-painted details and textiles produced in the north of the island. Our aim is to raise awareness of the craftsmanship behind these products, the stories behind their creators and to provide support and encouragement that traditions such as these might continue long into the future.
